July 2023 alumni update

Safe for Swimming?

As the summer heats up, a new report released by Environment America allows beachgoers to find out how often beaches in their state were unsafe in 2022.

Swimming in contaminated water can cause gastrointestinal and respiratory problems, eye and ear infections, and skin rashes.

And beach pollution is getting worse.

Investment is needed in stormwater and sewage projects.  While the 2021 bipartisan infrastructure law provided $11.7 billion in funds for such projects, the actual need is estimated at $271 billion.

The report also suggests what  local, state, and federal authorities can do to reverse the trend.

Lincoln Project co-founders at Explore Booksellers

The PIRGs’ own Explore Booksellers in Aspen, CO, recently hosted Lincoln Project co-founders Reed Galen and Rick Wilson at the store to talk about their new books. Wilson’s books are Everything Trump Touches, Dies; and Running Against the Devil.

In the photo below, Wilson, left, and Galen, right,  took a minute to pose together with Explore Bookseller manager, Jeff Bernstein.

Jeff said he thought they were going to talk about how they were going to go after moderate voters and liberal Reps to get them to vote for Biden, but what they talked mostly about was how their strategy is to drive Trump crazy. They were like a couple of merry pranksters.

The Lincoln Project SuperPAC was founded in late 2019 by former and current moderate Republicans, with two goals: to defeat Donald Trump at the ballot box and to ensure Trumpism fails alongside him.

Help us award the Jill Silverman Memorial Scholarship for a deserving canvasser

It's official. We are having a terrific summer on the canvass!   Please, consider  making a donation to the Jill Silverman Memorial Scholarship, which is an award we give to a deserving, outstanding summer canvasser with similar attributes to Jill. The donation link is below.

Jill Silverman was a canvasser with The Fund in the summer of 1989. That summer she died in a car accident on the way to a campaign event in Maine.  Jill was going to start her first semester at the University of Virginia. She had an incredible concern for the environment and knew the importance of activating the public to stop its destruction.

For the bulk of the past 33 years, we’ve collected donations amongst the canvassing staff, the career staff of the PIRGs, and now, we’re asking you, the alumni, to pitch in.  These donations are matched by the Fund, for the scholarship.

Please contribute to a GoFundMe donation drive I created for this purpose.

Thanks!

Chris Lindstrom
